Target Heart Rate

Best Heart Rate To Burn Fat

Like many concepts including fitness and fat loss, there are many differences in opinion.  Most people do agree that if your heart rate gets between 59-71% of your maximum you are more likely to be burning fat, than carbohydrates.  Even better, is when you are on a reduced calorie diet.  In this area, more calories are burned from fat (during an activity).  A very high heart rate will burn more calories in a shorter time period, and give you an afterburner effect, but if you go over 75% of your max, less of calories you burn will be from fat.

There are many proponents of high/intense interval training, which are short bursts of exercise (less then 60 seconds)  at 90% of your max pulse, followed by approximately 60-120 seconds of recovery.

We recommend to simply use an area  of 59-71%, to lose the most fat.

Target Heart Rate, How should you use it?

Your max heart rate is the maximum times your heart safely beats in a minute.  This number decreases as you age.  Pulse is best measured using 2 fingers on the neck or wrist.  A more accurate way to measure your heart rate is to buy/use a heart rate monitor .
